One small step for man...

At the end of my last board meeting with Devon Chamber, I asked my Chair if we could go for a curry when I got back from holiday. I’ve only done this a couple of times, and it has always been when there is something important to discuss.  What I was going to talk about was that I only had 6-12 months left in me as CEO. I had achieved everything I wanted to achieve, but after nearly seven years, a move, a restructure, two rebrands, a total revision of the membership offer, building a team, a merger, and positioning the Chamber to be the most trusted business representative organisation in the SW, it was time to move on.

On holiday (my first proper holiday in 5 years) I was sitting on my balcony in Gran Canaria, sipping whisky and scrolling through my social media feeds. I noticed that apart from every fifth picture being of my dog Charlie, everything was about work. I had also passed up the opportunity for two amazing third sector CEO roles that had crossed my desk and I wondered why. I realised I was simply exhausted and close to burn out. I needed a rest and time to recuperate, and also the hunger and energy for a new challenge.

So, I had an epiphany – I would resign when I got back. I could fill my time looking for the next role with consultancy work, reviving Stuart Elford Associates Ltd (SEAL) and working on developing my own business idea.  Events accelerated when I returned and I am grateful to the Chamber for releasing me early.

So here we are, I have taken one big step. It is scary, daunting and exciting all at the same time. I don’t know where this journey will take me, but I am grateful to you all for joining me on it, especially those who met me for coffee and have provided so much encouragement and support. Too many to mention here but you know who you are and I won’t forget your kindness and generosity. Thanks.
